ALDEN, N.Y. – The Erie County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an incarcerated individual who suffered a medical emergency while housed at the Erie County Correctional Facility.

According to Sheriff John C. Garcia, 74-year-old Darko Tabar was evaluated by medical staff at the correctional facility on July 24 after experiencing difficulty breathing. Due to his condition, he was transported to Erie County Medical Center by the Lancaster Volunteer Ambulance Corps at approximately 4:48 p.m. for additional medical treatment.

Just prior to midnight, hospital staff notified the Erie County Sheriff’s Office that Tabar had passed away.

Investigators say Tabar entered the custody of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office on July 7 after being arrested by the Buffalo Police Department on charges of Criminal Contempt in the Second Degree and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Officials also noted that he had a documented history of cardiac issues.

At this time, the Sheriff’s Office says there is no suspicion of foul play. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death remains ongoing, and no additional information has been released.
