BUFFALO, N.Y. | Erie County Blotter Memorial Tribute

Nine years ago today, Western New York experienced a heartbreaking loss that would forever leave its mark on the Buffalo Police Department, the law enforcement community, and thousands of residents across our region.

On Friday, October 13, 2017, Buffalo Police Lieutenant Craig E. Lehner, just 34 years old, was lost in the powerful currents of the Niagara River while participating in a training exercise with the department’s Underwater Recovery Team near Broderick Park.

What began as a routine training exercise quickly became a tragedy that brought an entire community together.

For five agonizing days, emergency responders from across Western New York, New York State, federal agencies, and Canada worked tirelessly in the dangerous waters of the Niagara River, determined to bring one of their own home.

On October 17, 2017, Lieutenant Lehner’s body was recovered.

Although the search had ended, the heartbreak was only beginning.

More Than a Badge: A Life Dedicated to Service

Craig Lehner was more than a police officer. He was a son, brother, friend, soldier, K-9 handler, and a man who devoted much of his life to helping others.

Before serving the streets of Buffalo, Lehner proudly served his country as a member of the New York Army National Guard.

During his 16 years of military service, he achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and completed deployments to Iraq and Guantanamo Bay.

He joined the Buffalo Police Department in 2008, beginning a law enforcement career that would span nine years.

Throughout his career, Lehner demonstrated a level of dedication, professionalism, compassion, and courage that earned him the respect of his fellow officers and the community he served.

But perhaps one of the most memorable chapters of his career was his partnership with his beloved German Shepherd, K-9 Shield.

Their relationship was more than that of a handler and working dog. They were partners, companions, and an inseparable team.

Together, they served the City of Buffalo and participated in community activities, including visits with children with special needs.

Shield’s name carried special meaning, honoring fallen Buffalo Police Officer James Shields, who died in the line of duty in 2002.

It was another example of Lehner’s commitment to remembering those who served before him.

Five Days That United Western New York

Those who lived through October 2017 will never forget the images.

Police vehicles lined the streets. Rescue boats searched the river. Helicopters flew overhead. Divers entered dangerous waters, and countless first responders worked around the clock.

Across Western New York, residents prayed, gathered, and waited for updates.

There were no jurisdictional boundaries in that mission.

There were simply brothers and sisters in public safety doing everything humanly possible to bring Craig home.

When Lieutenant Lehner was finally recovered, the entire region mourned.

Thousands attended his funeral at KeyBank Center on October 25, 2017. Law enforcement officers, military personnel, emergency responders, family members, friends, and members of the public came together to honor a man whose life had touched so many.

His loyal K-9 partner, Shield, was also present as the community said its final goodbye.

It was a powerful reminder that behind every badge is a human being, a family, a story, and a life that matters.

A Legacy That Lives On

In the years following his death, Lieutenant Lehner’s sacrifice has continued to be honored.

The Buffalo Police Department’s K-9 training facility on Louisiana Street was named in his memory.

Another Buffalo Police K-9 was named Lehner, ensuring that his name would continue to be spoken within the very unit he loved.

His name was also added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., joining the names of officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.

The New York State Senate honored Lehner with its Liberty Medal, recognizing his extraordinary service and sacrifice.

But his greatest legacy cannot be measured by medals, memorials, or buildings bearing his name.

It lives in the officers who remember him, the family who continues to love him, the colleagues who served alongside him, and the community that will never forget what he gave.

Nine Years Later, We Remember

Today, October 13, 2026, Erie County Blotter pauses to remember Lieutenant Craig E. Lehner and the sacrifice he made nine years ago.

We also remember the countless men and women who participated in the difficult search, the dispatchers who handled those calls, the officers who stood beside his family, and every first responder whose life was touched by this tragedy.

Most importantly, we remember Craig himself.

Not simply for the tragic circumstances surrounding his death, but for how he lived.

For his commitment to his country.

For his dedication to the people of Buffalo.

For his love of K-9 Shield.

For his courage, compassion, and willingness to serve others.

To the Lehner family, his friends, fellow officers, military brothers and sisters, and everyone who continues to carry his memory, please know that Western New York has not forgotten.

Nine years may have passed, but time does not erase sacrifice, service, or the impact of a life devoted to others.

Lieutenant Craig E. Lehner was 34 years old.

He served his country.

He protected his community.

He gave his life in the line of duty.

And he will forever remain part of the history and heart of Buffalo, New York.

Rest easy, Lieutenant Lehner.

Your watch has ended, but your legacy continues.

K-9 43. Forever remembered. Never forgotten.
