October 1 is right around the corner, marking the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

For many people, the pink ribbon immediately brings women to mind. But breast cancer does not only affect women. Men can develop breast cancer too, and because it is less common and often unexpected, warning signs can sometimes be overlooked until the disease has progressed.

This October, I’m asking everyone to help spread that message in memory of my brother, Erie County Sheriff’s Deputy Jamie Roche, who recently passed away.

Jamie was more than a member of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office. He was a brother, a friend, and someone whose strength, courage, personality, and smile touched the people fortunate enough to know him.

His memory gives us another reason to speak openly about something many men may never think could happen to them.

Breast Cancer Can Affect Men

Breast cancer in men is rare compared with breast cancer in women, but rare does not mean impossible.

Men should never ignore changes involving the breast or chest area, including a new lump, swelling, nipple changes, discharge, skin changes, or anything that simply does not seem normal.

Family history, genetics, age, and certain medical conditions can also influence risk.

Most importantly, do not be embarrassed to speak with your doctor.

Early detection can make an enormous difference in treatment options and outcomes.

Know Your Body. Know Your Risk.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about more than wearing pink. It is about education, early detection, supporting families, honoring those we have lost, and encouraging people to take their health seriously.

If something feels different, get it checked.

If breast cancer runs in your family, talk with your physician about your individual risk and whether screening may be appropriate for you.

And gentlemen, please remember:

Taking care of yourself does not make you weak. Asking your doctor a question could potentially save your life.

This October, please share this message for Jamie and for every man who never imagined breast cancer could happen to him.

In Loving Memory of Jamie Roche

A brother. A friend. A hero.

His strength, courage, and smile will never be forgotten.

Get checked. Spread awareness. Save lives.

For Jamie. For all men. 💗
