Fatal I-90 Crash in Newstead: Disabled Pickup Struck by Tractor-Trailer, One Killed

Passenger seriously injured as State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit investigates early-morning Thruway crash

NEWSTEAD, N.Y. | September 4, 2026

A deadly collision involving a tractor-trailer and a disabled pickup truck shut down a portion of the westbound New York State Thruway in the Town of Newstead early Friday morning, leaving one person dead and another seriously injured.

New York State Police say troopers assigned to Troop T at SP Buffalo responded to Interstate 90 at approximately 2:30 a.m. Friday, September 4, following a reported motor vehicle crash.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 2018 Volvo tractor-trailer was traveling westbound on I-90 when it struck a disabled 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck that was stopped on the right shoulder of the Thruway.

The driver of the pickup was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A passenger traveling in the pickup was transported to Erie County Medical Center for treatment. Updated information from State Police described the passenger’s injuries as serious but non-life-threatening.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was evaluated at the scene and was not reported injured. State Police said standardized field sobriety testing was administered to the tractor-trailer driver and showed no signs of impairment.

The collision caused extensive damage to the pickup and left wreckage and debris scattered throughout the crash area.

The right westbound lane of I-90 remained closed for several hours while emergency personnel worked at the scene and investigators documented the collision. The closure resulted in traffic delays stretching several miles during the Friday morning commute.

Major Investigation Underway

The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Troop A and the State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

State Police have not yet publicly determined what caused the tractor-trailer to collide with the disabled pickup.

At this time, authorities have not announced any charges, and there has been no official determination involving speed, distraction, fatigue, visibility, mechanical failure or any other possible contributing factor. The investigation remains ongoing.

Fire and Emergency Response

Separate radio traffic reviewed from the overnight incident shows that Lancaster Fire Dispatch dispatched Bowmansville and Millgrove fire companies at approximately 2:46 a.m. for a reported vehicle-versus-tractor-trailer crash on I-90 westbound near mile marker 408.

Dispatch traffic later referenced a patient with a severe abdominal injury. That radio traffic occurred before the complete outcome of the collision was known.
