ORCHARD PARK, NY — Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia is commending several first responders for their lifesaving actions outside Highmark Stadium on Saturday, August 15.

According to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, a 68-year-old man collapsed on the south side of Big Tree Road while walking toward the stadium before the Buffalo Bills game.

Deputies assigned to the game-day detail, including members of the Sheriff’s Medical Response Unit, immediately began performing chest compressions and used an automated external defibrillator, commonly known as an AED. Their efforts successfully restored the man’s pulse.

The deputies continued providing emergency care until personnel from the Orchard Park Fire District, Windom Fire Company and American Medical Response arrived.

The patient was transported to Mercy Hospital of Buffalo conscious and semi-alert.

Members of the New York State Police and Orchard Park Police Department also assisted at the scene.

“Time and time again, our deputies step up to the plate when called upon,” Sheriff Garcia said. “Members of our Medical Response Unit undergo training to respond to calls such as this one. They are tremendous assets to our agency and community.”

Sheriff Garcia also emphasized that this successful outcome demonstrates the importance of basic first-aid training, noting that emergencies can happen anywhere and without warning.

Outstanding teamwork by every first responder involved. Their quick actions, training and willingness to step forward gave this man a fighting chance.
