This week, Cheektowaga Police officers handled a wide variety of calls ranging from mental health crises and missing children to DWI arrests, domestic incidents, shoplifting complaints, suspicious activity, and numerous welfare checks. Below are some of the more notable incidents from the week.

🚨 Major Incidents

Child Reported Missing

Officers conducted an extensive overnight search after a 10-year-old child was reported missing. Patrol units checked numerous locations throughout the town including parks, neighborhoods, and residences where the child was believed to frequent. A Missing Person entry was completed as officers continued their search.

DWI Arrest

A suspected impaired driver was stopped near the Thruway Mall after police received reports of erratic driving. Following an investigation, officers administered field sobriety testing, placed one individual into custody, and charged the driver with Driving While Intoxicated.

Multiple Mental Health Emergencies

Officers responded to several mental health related incidents throughout the week, including:

• A report involving an individual believed to be experiencing a mental health crisis after leaving home. Officers successfully located the person and confirmed they were safe.
• A welfare check after concerns someone had texted the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline indicating pills had been taken. Officers located the individual, requested EMS evaluation, and completed the necessary mental health referrals.
• Several additional calls involving emotional crises, dementia-related concerns, and juvenile behavioral emergencies where officers worked alongside EMS and Crisis Services.

Overdose Response

Police and EMS responded to an unconscious individual where Narcan had already been administered prior to officers’ arrival. Additional emergency care was provided before the patient was transported to ECMC for treatment.

Domestic Violence & Family Disputes

Officers investigated numerous domestic-related calls during the week, including assaults, family disputes, and disturbances. Several incidents resulted in arrests or criminal investigations, while others were resolved through mediation and referrals after officers determined no criminal offense had occurred.

Child Welfare Investigation

Police worked alongside Child Protective Services during an overnight welfare investigation involving a child. The child was ultimately placed into CPS custody while officers completed reports and referrals.

🚓 Other Significant Police Activity

🔹 Officers investigated multiple reports of suspicious vehicles and suspicious people throughout neighborhoods, parking lots, schools, and businesses.

🔹 Detectives investigated a reported online exploitation complaint involving a juvenile who was manipulated into sharing private images after an online scam.

🔹 Officers responded to numerous welfare checks involving vulnerable individuals, elderly residents, intoxicated persons, and citizens experiencing medical emergencies.

🔹 Police investigated several larceny and shoplifting complaints at local businesses and commercial properties.

🔹 Patrol officers recovered a previously stolen vehicle and reunited it with its owner after coordinating with neighboring agencies.

🔹 Officers made numerous warrant arrests throughout the week, taking wanted individuals into custody without incident.

🐾 Animal Calls

• Officers responded to reports of a loose pit bull running through a neighborhood. Despite attempts, the dog could not immediately be located.

🚗 Traffic Enforcement

Cheektowaga Police remained proactive with traffic enforcement throughout the week, conducting dozens of traffic stops for:

• Speeding
• Equipment violations
• Headlight and taillight violations
• Registration issues
• Suspicious vehicles
• Reckless driving complaints
• DWI enforcement

Several vehicles were towed and multiple traffic citations were issued.

👮 Community Policing

Officers also responded to numerous quality-of-life complaints including:

• Loud parties
• Loud music
• Neighbor disputes
• Trespassing complaints
• Disturbances at hotels
• Welfare checks
• Suspicious circumstances
• Open doors and windows
• Motorist assists
• Road hazards
• Unwanted guests

Many of these calls were resolved peacefully through officer intervention, education, and voluntary compliance.
