Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard announced the arrest of two individuals on multiple drug-related charges following a week-long investigation. The investigation was conducted by the Sheriff’s Narcotics and Intelligence Unit and the Jail Management Division’s Field Intelligence Unit.
On March 29, Detectives and Deputies with the Narcotics and Intelligence Unit executed a search warrant, signed by Judge Kenneth Case, at 360 Dartmouth Avenue in the City of Buffalo. Within the residence, unit members discovered a felony amount of fentanyl and cocaine along with miscellaneous drug paraphernalia.
After the search, the Sheriff’s Office arrested 30-year-old Shakayla Huggins of Buffalo at the Dartmouth address. Then Deputies arrested 42-year-old Anthony Newbern of Buffalo at the holding center; Newbern was in custody awaiting transfer to a state prison facility following a recent conviction.
The investigation was initiated after the jail’s intel unit discovered information that Newbern was conspiring to sell narcotics during his incarceration at the Erie County Holding Center. The jail team shared the information with the Sheriff’s Narcotics Unit, which resulted in the Dartmouth Avenue raid and the drug dealers' arrest.
Huggins’ Charges:
· Class-B felony of criminal possession of a narcotic with intent to sell;
· Class-C felony of criminal possession of narcotics;
· Class-E felony of conspiracy;
· Class-A misdemeanor of criminal use of drug paraphernalia;
· Class-A misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child.
Newbern’s Charges:
· Class-B felony of criminal possession of a narcotic with intent to sell;
· Class-C felony of criminal possession of narcotics;
· Class-E felony of conspiracy;
· Class-A misdemeanor of criminal use of drug paraphernalia.
Both defendants are remanded to the Erie County Holding Center pending a future court date.
