Erie County Sheriff Deputies Save an Inmate From Attempted Suicide.

From the Erie County Sheriff's Office:

Buffalo, NY – Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia reports that deputies assigned to the Erie County Holding Center prevented an incarcerated individual from committing suicide.

On July 27, 2022, at approximately 12:58 a.m., Deputies Theal, Willard, and Kohlhagen responded to a cell and discovered the individual lying on his back with a piece of bedding linen tied around their neck.

Deputy Theal used a ResQHook knife to free the linen, and, with assistance from Deputy Willard, the cloth was removed from around the incarcerated individual’s neck.

Sheriff Garcia stated, “I want to commend the quick, life-saving actions the deputies took to prevent a tragedy.”

The individual was evaluated by medical personnel from the Division of Correctional Health. The medical staff did not note any injuries, and the incarcerated individual did not report any injuries.
