Concord, NY – Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia reports deputies responded to an overdue kayaker in the Town of Concord Wednesday night.
At approximately 11 p.m., Deputy Farina took a complaint at the Springville Substation for a kayaker who was overdue from their trip on the Cattaraugus Creek. The deputy learned that the missing kayaker should be somewhere between Hake Road and Randall Drive
Attempts to ping the individual’s cell phone were unsuccessful, but Deputies located the individual’s vehicle in a public parking lot near Hake Road just before midnight.
Deputy Farina entered the woods at Hake Road and walked westward, while Deputy Kuhn entered near Randall Drive and headed eastward. A short time later, Deputy Farina heard a whistle and walked toward the call.
At approximately 12:30 a.m., Deputy Farina located the missing kayaker. However, because of the risk of flash flooding, the two could not walk the creek bed and were forced to traverse the woods. Deputy Farina and the individual’s pace was slowed by the terrain and weather conditions.
Around 2:53 a.m., Deputy Kuhn, who entered from Randall Drive, located the party, and the three exited the woods around 3:07 a.m.
The female kayaker was evaluated by EMS and was released.
The Springville Fire Department assisted with the search, and Hamburg Fire Department’s water rescue resources were notified.
