Erie Co Holding Center Sheriffs Deputy Gets Attacked While Meals Were Being Delivered.

Buffalo, NY – Erie County Sheriff John C. Garcia reports a Deputy was attacked and injured by an incarcerated individual on May 30, 2022, during meal service at the Erie County Holding Center.

At approximately 4:00 p.m., Deputies arrived at incarcerated individual Jerry Knightner’s cell when Knightner began making verbal threats. He was ordered to sit on his bunk, and Deputies opened the door to deliver the meal. When the cell door was opened, Knightner charged a Deputy attacking him. The Deputy used defensive tactics to end the attack, and Knightner retreated into his cell.

The Deputy sustained an injury to his hand, which required medical attention.

Knightner is charged with a class-A misdemeanor,obstructing governmental administration and a harassment-2nd violation.


The incarcerated individual is held at the holding center on $10,000.00 Bail or $25,000.00 bond from a December 2021 arrest for aggravated assault on a police officer and reckless endangerment.
